the series written by Frank Herbert was totally awesome. when it first came out on the big screen in 1980, i was totally unaware of the extent of his work. the world he created (like the world created by Tolkien in LOTR) was so extensive it could have filled an entire encyclopedia. big enough for his son, Brian to write the prequels - House Atreides, House Harkonnen, House Corrino, and The Butlerian Jihad. I love the way everything twists around so there is always a suprise at the end of every book. Dune has so many deeper issues than LOTR - religious, government, social. it makes you think about a world that could be.

Re: Better than LOTR? What do you think?
Tue, June 7, 2005 - 1:04 PMI have read and may even still have all these titles.
His kid Brian, can't write.
Frank was like a 1950's Dostoyevsky. What's really interesting is that you can't "date" his works.
Unlike Heinlein whose work is so datable it marrs his work there isn't anything about Herbert that dates him.

Re: Better than LOTR? What do you think?
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 11:06 AMIndeed, Brian can't write. Which is sad. The prequels and sequels are such a nice idea. Though it is an excellent opportunity to compare talent and "less than talent" writing in the same world. The differences are stunning. I've read Frank's Dune series so many times and it holds water every time. And I always see something new and wish he were around to answer the questions. For instance, what ever happened to the child that Count Fenring's Bene Geserit wife got when she seduced Feyd-Rautha. It is set up in book one and then never mentioned again! Hmmm. -
